Inspiration drives a lot of what we do. It gives us the motivation to get out of bed every morning, in many cases, and work to achieve our dreams.
I know inspiration is what drove me to write Between the Levees. All those days when I couldn't stand to read the same sentence one more time, I just needed to think about why I was doing what I was doing; I only had to think about what inspired me in the first place and, from there, I could begin again with a reinvigorated passion.
I recently spoke with Quinn Welsch, the editor of The West Side Journal in Port Allen, LA, my hometown, about what inspired me to write Between the Levees. For me, it was more than just one thing, and probably a lot more than he and I talked about. But I think he captured perfectly a few of the things that drove me to write my debut novel: a deep connection to family, Louisiana, nature, and the Atchafalaya River Basin.
